African Nova Scotians

The first African Nova Scotians were slaves brought to the area by New England settlers, followed later by black Loyalists and escaped slaves from the United States. After the abolition of slavery in 1833, African Nova Scotians gradually became more integrated into mainstream society. To have a guided tour of the museum that focuses on African Nova Scotian artifacts and history, please contact the museum in advance of your visit.
