The Acadians

The French were the earliest European settlers in Nova Scotia, cultivating farm land through the establishment of dykes. These settlers became a distinct cultural group known as the Acadians. In the Great Expulsion of 1760, thousands of Acadians were deported by the British, but many later returned to the region. To this day, the Acadian dialect and culture remain strong in Yarmouth County.
